Classification: Salary, Exempt Position
Minimum Qualifications
While a college degree in construction management or a related field would be a plus, having the right experience is most critical. Relevant experience with structural steel and misc. metals is important. Estimators should be adept enough with computers to learn FabSuite software if there is no prior knowledge of that production software. The Estimator should also possess strong skills with Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, Outlook). An eye for detail and patience is imperative. Being able to work without extensive interaction with others is part of the job. In all cases, it is expected that the Estimator represent Milling with integrity and diplomacy.
Key Responsibilities
The estimator is to remain in contact with General Contractors and create relationships that are based on trust and strong communication. Successful bidding maintains valuable employment for many employees. The estimator needs to be in tune with changes in the market and economy that would have an impact on the way we quote work to be successful and profitable. He must also have a clear understanding of our shop efficiencies and improvements to stay on the cutting edge. Clear definition of scope will help Project Managers be successful. Job handoffs should include enough information to allow Project Managers to hit the ground running. Be vocal about deadline difficulties and communicate with the General Manager and President often about trends you see in bid invitations.
Essential Job Functions
The primary task of the Estimator is to produce high quality structural steel quotes according to the highest probability of success. The job requires great follow up to understand the marketplace and why Milling is not awarded some jobs. This is a timeline driven position as bids will close whether our quote is submitted or not. The estimator is to understand and quote the cost of steel, labor, equipment and overhead to ensure we are profitable in our work. Quotes are to be detailed enough to derive scope and minimize expensive errors. General Contractors will often ask for break outs to explain portioned cost. The hours of the estimator are dictated completely by the length of time it takes to complete valuable bid opportunities, but it could be anticipated that an estimator may labor for roughly 50 hours a week or more depending on bid opportunities.
Compensation & Benefits
Salary is individually negotiated. There is an opportunity for Profit Sharing if the company is sufficiently profitable. Also available are health benefits, 401(k), paid time off and more. To best produce the highest quality product, Milling Machinery’s Detailing Standard is regularly reviewed by the MMI QMS Team and updated to maximize consistency and minimize errors in drawings and files provided by various detailers.
Once a detailer has been launched the Detailing Coordinator monitors and checks that all the deliverables are provided and correctly reflect the projects scope of work. Any mistakes are documented and submitted back to the Detailers for correction through the Detailing Coordinator.
Essential Job Functions
The primary function of the Detailing Coordinator is to act as liaison between steel detailers and Milling Machinery; also, to detail smaller jobs and assist the Project Managers in producing sketches or concept drawings for bids, RFI’s and change orders.
