A HistoricalGenerational Perspective
As MMI Industrial & Steel marks its golden jubilee, it’s a momentous occasion not just for the company, but for everyone who has been part of its remarkable journey. From its humble beginnings, to becoming a company that continually stands strong in the industrial and steel business, despite challenges in the market and industry it serves. Every step has been paved with dedication, innovation, and the relentless pursuit of never giving up.
To gain insight into some of the company’s history, challenges, and accomplishments, we sat down with Clif Pinckard, the founder and original visionary behind MMI. Here’s what he had to say:
Inspiration and Early Challenges
Reflecting on the origins of MMI, Clif Pinckard reminisces about his entrepreneurial background, rooted in the Pinckard family's legacy of farming and ranching. He shares, “I thought I would always be a farmer like my father, but I had an opportunity with a friend to start a career in Phoenix as a millwright at Ralston Purina. It was there that I noticed the abundance of machinery in the feed and grain industry, which sparked a desire to carve out my own path after they shut theRalston Purina Plant down. We were some of the last employees due to helping with the removal of all the equipment on the plant property.” The conclusion of that job led Clif to officially establish Clifton R Pinckard Erector Service in 1974. With a truck and a welding machine, he started what would soon become MMI Industrial & Steel.
The early years were fraught with challenges consistent with what we see in the market today; from finding skilled labor, to market shifts like those that came in the late 70’s and early 80’s and rising fuel and interest rates. Arizona was not as prominent a player with industry as other areas of the United States. This required Clif to remain primarily in the Agricultural space, eventually taking on a large project at a new sawmill expansion in Whiteriver, AZ, which lasted a of couple years. From the struggle to secure consistent work in the early 80’s came an opportunity to erect the steel for the new Frito Lay plant in Casa Grande, AZ. This presented other opportunities and was the start of MMI into the steel fabrication and erection segment of the business. Through perseverance and ingenuity, Clif steered MMI through adversity. Creating innovative solutions with his background as a Millwright, he was able to be diversified in the type of work MMI took on.
Evolution and Growth
As MMI evolved over the decades, Clif highlights pivotal moments that shaped its trajectory. "Allowing my sons to be involved in the business and diversifying further into the steel industry were transformative decisions that laid the foundation for sustained growth," he shares. Collaborations with esteemed contractors like Kitchell propelled MMI into new markets, cementing its reputation as a trusted partner in large-scale projects.
Adaptation to Technological Advancements
Adapting to technological advancements has been crucial for MMI's competitiveness. Clif underscores the proactive approach the company embraced. Integrating back in 80’s cutting-edge machinery like the "Piranha ironworker" and a vertical saw for cutting heavier steel and bundles helped to enhance efficiency and productivity.
Memorable Projects and Achievements
Among the myriad of projects MMI undertook, Clif fondly recalls the challenges and triumphs that defined the company's legacy. "From constructing hospital facilities to spearheading innovative solutions for clients like Frito Lay and Apache Timber, each endeavor left an indelible mark," he reflects, showcasing MMI's expertise and commitment to excellence.
Sustaining Legacy and Values
Looking ahead, Clif emphasizes the importance of upholding MMI's legacy built on honesty, respect, and integrity. "As the torch passes to future generations," he advises, "be diligent, be prudent in financial management, and always have a well-defined plan."
As MMI Industrial & Steel celebrates 50 years of continued success, it stands as a testament to the business values of it founder and the dedication of its team. With a rich history in the state of Arizona, the journey continues, promising a future filled with innovation, excellence, and enduring success.
