Shipping Manager, Edgar Torres, recently shared insight into what being HUNGRY at MMI means to him and sheds light on the mindset that drives both individual growth and collective success within our company.

What Does It Mean to Be HUNGRY?

“When I think of our core value HUNGRY, I think of a certain type of mentality. A type of mentality that craves success and self-improvement,” Edgar shares. “Developing goals and doing whatever is necessary to achieve them, whether it be education on new subjects or being humble enough to see when something is failing and find a different path forward without losing focus or being discouraged.”

HUNGRY is not simply about ambition. It's about having the drive to constantly push yourself beyond your limits, to seek out new challenges, and to persist in the face of adversity. For Edgar, this mentality is not innate. Instead, it’s something that can be cultivated.

“By shifting the way you view things, someone can become hungrier,” Edgar explains. “For example, embracing and welcoming challenges as new opportunities to learn and grow from, being open to new ideas or methods, and not being afraid of change.”

This perspective emphasizes that being HUNGRY is about more than personal gain. It’s a relentless pursuit of growth—both for oneself and for those around you. Edgar’s experience at MMI has shown him that this Core Value, when embraced fully, can lead to remarkable results.

“Personally, I have found that being hungry and striving for more has yielded remarkable results in both my professional and personal life,” Edgar says. “Overcoming challenges, which I once viewed as unachievable, gave me a sense of fulfillment and accomplishment, which itself led to more motivation to continue to strive for more.”

Edgar’s journey is a testament to the power of the HUNGRY mindset. By embracing challenges and viewing them as opportunities for growth, he has been able to achieve things he once thought were out of reach. This mindset helps individuals reach their goals and inspires others to do the same.

“Embracing HUNGRY as a core value can have an impact on those around us in the form of motivating others to reach their maximum potential, therefore creating a group of encouragement among your peers, and eventually shifting into a culture of self-improvement in the workspace,” Edgar adds.

When asked what inspired him to speak about HUNGRY, Edgar’s response was clear: “It’s an important Core Value; it says a lot about an individual and their commitment to themselves and their work. Personally, I enjoy seeing the progress of someone who chooses to self-improve and try to reach their potential.”

At MMI, it is our hope that this value goes further than being a personal philosophy, because to us, it’s a cornerstone of our company culture. Edgar has witnessed this firsthand in his role as Shipping Manager.

“In my time here, I have seen numerous people start working here with little to no experience and have seen them progress and move up simply because they want more for themselves,” Edgar shares. “They demonstrated that and were given the opportunity, and I think that’s great!”
